Hello! I have a growing library of media and currently I’m using a single 2TB HDD to store them but it’s a single point of failure and I’d like to avoid that. I have the minimum budget possible, and I’m assuming the hard disks themselves will cost most. So keeping that in mind, I have two routes I guess:

Buy something like a Synology DS214se, a 2 bay entry level NAS

Buy cheapest possible parts and make a server of my own to act as a NAS and run FreeNAS on it. I could get an entry level LGA1150 CPU in it.
My current media usage goes like this:

Drive attached to my router which acts as a cheap ass NAS

rMBP as a Plex Media Server which then plays whatever I want to my Chromecast driven TV. This actually works really well.
If I get something like a Synology entry level NAS, I can forget about running Plex on it since almost all of my media needs to transcode. That route basically ensures my current setup with the router-NAS replaced with an actual NAS.
If I do a DIY NAS I can possibly dream of running Plex on it which can transcode one stream at a time which is, generally, most I require. It’ll also probably give me more freedom being a x86 build when compared to ARMv7. But I want something not that hard to setup, low footprint in terms of size and power draw and reliable. I don’t have to have transcoding ability and I want the cost to be minimum.
What would you do? I am kind of stuck.
P.S.: Is there any solution which allows me to connect my NAS via USB instead of Ethernet? As in something that can act as both, a NAS and an external hard disk at the same time?
